Ahh!! Lena Waithe’s TV Show About ‘A Queer Black Girl’ Is Real And Happening

Lena Waithe’s making another TV show! Valentine’s Day is good now!

On Wednesday afternoon, TVLine reported that cable channel TBS had placed a pilot order for Waithe’s Twenties, a single-camera comedy about a queer black woman and her friends.

“[Twenties] follows the adventures of a queer black girl, Hattie, and her two straight best friends, Marie and Nia, who spend most of their days talking shit and chasing their dreams,” reads a press release tweeted by Vulture staff writer E. Alex Jung. “It’s a show about friendship, finding love, and messing everything up along the way.”

Waithe, who won Outstanding Writing for a Comedy at the Emmys last fall for penning the “Thanksgiving” episode of Master of None, has been working on this show for a while. She made a pilot for an earlier incarnation of the series back in 2013still watchable on YouTubebut even then she was already years deep in the project.

“I wrote Twenties back in 2009,” said Waithe, whose drama The Chi premiered earlier this year on Showtime. “I always wanted to tell a story where a queer black woman was the protagonist.”

“Queer black characters have been the sidekick for long enough, it’s time for us to finally take the lead,” she said.
