Amandla Stenberg Wants to Play a Gay Superhero

Out gay actress Amandla Stenberg is currently starring in The Darkest Minds, a movie about youth with special powers who are detained by the government — timely — and while doing press for the film, she said she’d love to play an LGBTQ superhero next.

When asked if it was time for an LGBTQ superhero, she exclaimed, “Fuck yes. Yes please, I would like that. It would be an honor to play that, it would be fantastic.”

Last month, Stenberg came out as gay in an interview with her girlfriend King Princess for Wonderland. She had previously come out as bisexual in 2016, but in June, she said, “I was so overcome with this profound sense of relief when I realized that I’m gay – not bi, not pan, but gay – with a romantic love for women.”

The 19-year old added, “I’m grateful for how being gay has afforded me this ability to experience and understand love and sex, and therefore life, in an expansive and infinite way.”

The Darkest Minds hits theaters August 3, with Stenberg playing the lead role of Ruby Daly.
