Anti-Gay Marriage Group is Boycotting Britney Spears Because She Stans for the LGBT

Try not to laugh: A discriminatory group that advocates for “traditional marriage” between a man and a woman is pushing for people to stop listening to Britney Spears due to her longtime support of the LGBTQ community.

The Facebook group — obviously it’s on Facebook, a haven for bigots — is called 1,000,000 Supporting Traditional Marriage (but has under 200,000 members). After Britney released a special Pride edition of her Fantasy perfume, with part of the proceeds going toward GLAAD, the group called for fans to boycott the iconic singer—which is hilarious.

Spears has been a luminary for the LGBTQ community for years. On Saturday, she headlined Brighton Pride, and earlier this year, GLAAD honored her with the Vanguard award for making “a significant difference in promoting equality and acceptance of LGBTQ people.” The pop star has consistently promoted equality and acceptance by going purple on GLAAD’s annual spirit day, an anti-bullying campaign, as well as contributing to a special song “Hands,” along with over 20 other artists, which was dedicated to the victims of the Orlando Pulse massacre.

But activism aside, let’s not forget who Britney’s fan base is. Since Trump became president, I’ve seen some completely obtuse news stories. But I have never heard of anything more inconsequential than a bunch of bigots boycotting the queen of pop, as if their insignificant actions would remotely affect her career and/or her feelings toward the LGBTQ community, which has breathed life into her music for two decades, and continues to promote her career and reinvigorate every iteration of her work.
