Grindr Just Honored Queer Voices Who DGAF at the Zero Filter Awards

· Updated on May 29, 2018

Last week, Grindr honored outpspoken LGBTQ artists and activists at the first-ever Zero Filter Awards, a ceremony-turned-party that was as inspiring and unapologetically queer as the diverse voices it celebrated.

The event, the result of a partnership with BMW that marked the culmination of the carmaker’s #ProjectUnfollow campaign, upended the traditional awards show format at every turn, inviting guests into a former underground bank vault in Downtown LA for a night of unfiltered stunts and shenanigans hosted by Drag Race season 10 queen Monique Heart. Stunning!

The night’s honorees hailed from across the LGBTQ spectrum, and each stayed true to the spirit of the awards as they accepted their gold ZFA brick. LCD Soundsystem member and trans rights activist Gavin Rayna Russom shouted out the people who paved the way for her success. Poet Danez Smith performed their hilarious and devastating queer creation myth Genesissy. Trans Latina activist Bamby Salcedo invited gender-nonconforming people from the audience up to share the stageand the awardwith her. And out-and-proud pop hitmaker Justin Tranter closed the night with a medley of his biggest hits accompanied by a string quartet.

After the show, the evening’s guestswhich included LGBTQties like Jacob Tobia, Arisce Wanzer, Ari Fitz, and Chester Lockhartglammed it up next door at an afterparty DJ’ed by Gavin Rayna Russom.
