In every incarnation of Willy Wonka, from Roald Dahl’s original book to Johnny Depp’s chocolatier with a severe bob, one question about the iconic character has gone unanswered: Does he stan Nicki Minaj?
Worry no more. Our newest Wonka, Timothée Chalamet, confirmed in a new red carpet interview that Willy loves both chocolate bars and Nicki’s bars.
When an interviewer asked if Wonka would be a Barb, Chalamet kept his answer simple: “Hell yeah,” he said. “He would love the cut.”
And Wonka’s favorite Nicki lyric according to Chalamet? The one that references himself, of course: “Yeah, I’m in that Tonka, color of Willy Wonka,” from her legendary verse on “Monster.”

Twice a week, our newsletter will bring you the pulse of queer culture, from the tastemakers to the groundbreakers.
Chalamet is playing Wonka in — you guessed it — Wonka, an origin story that also happens to be a musical (despite how the trailer would have you think otherwise). It only makes sense that the most musical Wonka yet would have the best taste in rappers, too.

In the same interview, Chalamet said Wonka’s other favorite song would be “The Rainbow Connection” from The Muppet Movie. Now that he mentions it, Chalamet would kill it as Kermit the Frog, too.
It’s no surprise that Chalamet’s Wonka would be a Barb, considering the actor himself has long been a fan of the rapper. He’s previously told fans his favorite Nicki song is “Roman’s Revenge,” a track he performed himself while in high school during his short-lived rap career as Lil Timmy Tim. Donning a pink bob and spitting lyrics with the intensity only a true Barb could deliver, Chalamet seemed briefly possessed by Minaj’s spirit on stage. Hopefully, that fire will be on display when Wonka hits theaters on December 15 — a week after Minaj’s new album, Pink Friday 2, drops on December 8.
