Unless you’ve been busy doing real things in the real outside world, the Met Gala has been inescapable over the last few days. More specifically, the fashion at the Met Gala has been all over the socials. Mostly, we’ve seen a lot of celebrities in a lot of expensive, flashy outfits. But trans makeup artist and YouTuber NikkieTutorials opted for something more meaningful—an homage to the legendary Marsha P Johnson.
PAY IT NO MIND 🏳️⚧️ when I got asked to join the Met Gala(!!!!!) I knew I wanted to pay homage to a trans icon who was at the forefront of the Stonewall Riots… Marsha P. Johnson paved the way for so many of us, and I hope I made my community proud 😮💨💕 #MetGala pic.twitter.com/k8bC6Cpfgd

Her outfit consisted of a sea-green gown decorated with flowers and a sash bearing Johnson’s catchphrase “Pay It No Mind.” This is what the “P” in Marsha P Johnson’s name stood for, and the “It” referred to her gender. NikkieTutorials also wore a version of Johnson’s iconic floral headdress, including two gold mirrors on either side.
Taking to Instagram to express her feelings, NikkieTutorials gushed, “PAY IT NO MIND. When I got asked to join the Met Gala(!!!!!) I knew I wanted to pay homage to a trans icon who was at the forefront of the Stonewall Riots… Marsha P. Johnson paved the way for so many of us, and I hope I made my community proud.
“This night has been so incredibly surreal…. I can’t wait to tell you EVERYTHING!!!!!! WE DID IT GUYS!!!!!!!!”
The theme of the Met Gala for this year was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”, and it’s safe to say that a tribute to a queer American hero earned Nikkie passing marks. Many fans agreed.

This is what you get when you invite kind, empathetic influencers, who actually have something on their mind other than fame and getting rich fast. Good on you @NikkieTutorials ❤ pic.twitter.com/nC4DbGHVbJ

All in all, trans celebrities showed up at the Met Gala. Kim Petras rode in with a literal horse-themed gown. MJ Rodriguez took us back in time with a Thom Browne Victorian-inspired dress. And Elliot Page offered us a green rose in homage to Oscar Wilde. We accept, Elliot. We accept.
The #MetGala really said “Trans Is Beautiful”🏳️⚧️💙🏳️⚧️💗🏳️⚧️🤍
