In 1998, Sex and the City first blessed our television screens. In 2012, its spiritual successor Girls brought us another dysfunctional group of girlfriends. Now, in 2024, we’re due for another helping of a twenty-something dramedy — and Rachel Sennott is ready to deliver it.
HBO just ordered a new series from Sennott, known for her scene-stealing roles in Bottoms, Shiva Baby, and Bodies, Bodies, Bodies. In the untitled project, “a codependent friend group reunites, navigating how the time apart, ambition and new relationships have changed them,” per its press release.
We’re immediately seated for anything with Sennott’s name attached, but this new series is especially exciting. It’s fulfilling a TV prophecy: that every generation should receive a life-changing comedy series about messy girls living in a city.

In response to the recent revival of interest in Lena Dunham’s hit series Girls, which was that portrait of flawed friendship for millennials, the internet has been speculating on when a new Girls or Sex and the City would arise.
“We are almost exactly the amount of time away from the Girls premiere as the Sex and the City premiere was to the Girls premiere when it came out, so if you are in your mid to late 20s and you want to make a show about dating in New York City, now is your time,” screenwriter Brenden Gallagher noted on X, formerly Twitter, almost exactly a month ago. What did he know that we don’t!?
Regardless, Gallagher’s prediction seems to be coming true, and fans couldn’t be more excited.
Then there’s the question of casting. Sennott is already confirmed to star in the series, but who will join her on-screen friend group? The internet is praying for other Gen Z darlings like Ayo Edibiri, Molly Gordon, Beanie Feldstein, and Kaia Gerber — but only time will tell.
