Past ‘RPDR: All Stars’ Winners Return in ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Parody Promo

This week, some of our favorite drag queens return to VH1 to win the ultimate crown for season three of RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars. Trixie Mattel, Milk, Shangela and others return for the coming season, including a surprise contestant, yet to be announced. But let’s not forget previous winners, Chad Michaels and Alaska Thunderfuck.

The reigning champs return in a new clip to give everyone a glimpse of what life after all-stardom is really like. But apparently, it’s more like a dystopian future than anything else. In the short video, Chad and Alaska meet for a walk in some familiar red frocks and white bonnets.

In the parody video of The Handmaid’s Tale, Chad and Alaska exchange a “blessed be” before discussing what’s to come in season three. From the shocks and twists to the “Ruturn for their Ruvenge,” we’re not only gagging over the new season, but the potential for some major pop culture and social commentary, if this clip is any indication.

The handmaid ensemble has been popularized not only by the Hulu show, but by protesters across the country. The Hollywood Handmaids recently made their debut at the Golden Globes to protest the rampant sexual harassment in the industry. They even got some words of approval from Handmaid’s Tale star, Elisabeth Moss at the recent SAG Awards.

Is this clip just a clever marketing ploy or a hint at some socially conscious themes in the upcoming season? The past queens have been known to take an outspoken approach to similar issues. In Alaska’s single, “The T” which was released after she won season two of All Stars, she included some gender advocacy in the lyrics. “Let’s pay women an equal wage. No, seriously What the fuck?”

Regardless, if the All Stars hall of fame resembles Gilead this much, we should really send some help for Chad and Alaska. At least they look nice in red.

Season three of RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars premieres Thursday, January 25 on VH1. Watch the promo below:
