Samira Wiley Dubs Ellen ‘Lord of the Lesbians’

· Updated on May 29, 2018

Samira Wiley appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show for the first time Tuesday, and boy was she amped. But according to The Handmaid’s Tale actress, these queer icons have met beforebut Ellen didn’t remember.

On Tuesday morning, the Orange is the New Black star told DeGeneres, “I met you, like, really briefly one time.” She quipped, “I know you don’t remember it because you’re Ellen, but it meant a lot to me because you’re lord of the lesbians.”

It brings me great joy that queer women are developing their own sort of feudal ruling order amongst ourselves. In addition to Hayley Kiyoko, who fans have dubbed as our savior Lesbian Jesus, Samira Wiley has officially appointed Ellen as our Lord.

When DeGeneres asked Wiley where they first met, the actress gave the most relatable queer answer of all time.

“Probably at a lesbian event,” she said, “I go to those sometimes. I see you at those.” the host quipped, “At the meetings? At the lesbian meetings?”

In my experience, queer women often know each other through “being gay,” and it was hilarious to see that experience mirrored by the Lord herself.

Wiley talked to DeGeneres about her poignant role as Moira in The Handmaid’s Tale. “You see how much it permeates the culture that we’re living in right now,” she said of the now-iconic red costumes and bonnets, which many women have adopted in real-life protests. “It’s everywhere.”

She also gushed about her one-year wedding anniversary with wife Lauren Morelli, a writer on Orange is the New Black, which she celebrated at Disneyland. “We’re both really big kids,” she told the host.

Season 2 of The Handmaid’s Tale hits Hulu April 25.
