Jerrod Carmichael’s mom caught on camera STILL trying to pray away the gay inside him

We love comedian Jerrod Carmichael and can’t wait to watch his upcoming HBO docuseries. However, the Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show won’t just offer wisecracks and humor.

In a trailer for the show, which will debut later this month, Carmichael, 36, reveals that he wanted to present a very honest portrait of his life, including his relationship with his parents.

“Yes, I bring in cameras, and yes that’s my way, and yes I’m afraid to have these conversations without them,” Carmichael says. “Let’s just blow this sh*t wide open.”

Jerrod Carmichael was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He has often talked about growing up poor in his comedy routines. The new show explores how his parents struggled with his sexuality. In one part, Carmichael tells his dad that when he came out to him, his father acted like someone had died. This hurt Carmichael deeply.

In another part, he’s seen discussing his sexuality with his Christian mom. When he came out to her, she told him he was going to hell.

She suggests she can’t change her opinion as she “didn’t write the Bible.” Another part shows her praying to God, while holding her son’s hand, to remove his desire to sleep with other men.

For anyone raised in a religious household, who experienced the pain of coming out to devout parents, the section could be triggering.

The show will also candidly explore Carmichael’s quest for love and connection, including scrolling through dating apps and meeting with men. In another part, he hilariously tries to explain the concept of bears, twinks and twunks to his father.

Stand-up career

Carmichael relocated to Los Angeles at the age of 20 to pursue his dream of being a stand-up comic.

His first HBO stand-up comedy special was Love at the Store (2014), directed by Spike Lee.

This was followed by the NBC sitcom, The Carmichael Show (2015-2017), and a second comedy special, 8 (2017). A third HBO special, Rothaniel, arrived in 2022. In it, he officially came out as gay. It won him an Emmy. He also hosted the 80th Golden Globe Awards that year.

The first episode of the eight-part Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show will air on March 29, 2024.
