“The transgenders [sic] don’t have rights,” Moore claimed during a Wednesday press conference, as theMontgomery Advertiserreports. “They’ve never been denominated as having rights by the U.S. Supreme Court.”
At least four women allege that the 70-year-oldsolicited them for sex as teenagersin a bombshell report from theWashington Postwhich broke the same day. Leigh Corfman claims she just 14 when Moorethen a district attorneyapproached her outside of a courthouse. Now 57, she says that the Congressional hopeful took her out twice, undressing her and fondling her through her bra and panties on the second interaction.
Moore denies the allegations, but they could spell trouble for his political aspirations. He is currently running against Democrat Doug Jones for the Senate seat vacated by Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell and former presidential candidate Mitt Romney have called upon Moore, whoholds a double-digit lead, to step down.
The former Alabama Supreme Court justice used the Thursday presser not to address the reports, which he has referred to as “fake news,” but to attack his opponent’s support for LGBTQ rights. Moore claimed that Jones, a former federal prosecutor, supports “transgender issues and transgender rights in the military.”
“He believes in transgender bathrooms and transgenders in the military,” he said. “I disagree with him 100 percent.”
This is far from the first time that Moore, whowas ousted from the bench in 2015for attempting to block same-sex marriages in his state, has taken aim at transgender equality. Heclaimed that a federal judge in Washington, D.C.who blocked President Trump’s ban on open trans military service should be impeached.
“We don’t need transgender bathrooms and we don’t need transgender military and we don’t need a weaker military,” Moore said in October. “We need to go back to what this country is about.”
One of thenation’s most dedicated opponents of LGBTQ rights, the GOP candidate hasclaimed that homosexuality should be illegalandcompared same-sex marriage to slavery. During his tenure as a judge in Alabama, heblocked a lesbian mother from unsupervised visitation rightsto her children, claiming that her “lifestyle” posed a danger to her children.
