Indya Moore Becomes YSL’s New Brand Ambassador

There’s never been any doubt about it: actor, model and “Pose” star Indya Moore is one of the beautiful people. It’s no wonder, then, that the nonbinary icon was tapped to be one of Yves Saint Laurent beauty’s newest Brand Ambassadors.

In an Instagram post, Moore talked about how the new role was an exciting chance for them to “contribute to the evolution of how we celebrate beauty.” Moore also noted how excited they were to be able to collaborate with Black and brown people for the campaign, helping to fight the colorism that unfortunately plagues the beauty industry at large.

Not to be outdone, YSL Beauty shared its own post featuring Moore in a stunning black suit and bold red lip. “Stop scrolling,” the post reads. “This is NOT a drill.”

Moore’s appointment to the role is groundbreaking for several reasons. In the past, makeup brands were more interested in presenting a more binary depiction of their products, enforcing the stereotype that makeup and skincare are somehow exclusively a cis female concern. And while more recently we’ve seen the rise of nonbinary beauty influencers and brand ambassadors such as “Queer Eye’s” Jonathan Van Ness and Patrick Starrr, we can’t forget how hard nonbinary and queer folks of color have had to fight against colorist, racist, and transphobic standards perpetuated by the beauty industry. Just a few years ago, trans model Munroe Bergdorf became the face of a new L’Oreal beauty campaign, only to be fired after making comments that were critical of white supremacy. Yup, you heard that right. So Moore’s appointment isn’t just gorgeous, hot, and amazing: it’s positively groundbreaking. More of this, please!
