Watch It!

Watch It! Sydney Sweeney, Noël Coward, and “The Morning Show”

Another weekend is upon us, and luckily, there’s no shortage of cool, weird shit to watch. If you’re in the mood to spend the entire next two days in front of the TV (I am!) we’ve got you covered.

For the weirdos: If you’re an unapologetic bizzaro like myself, you’ll be happy to know that 2020’s Blithe Spirit comes to Showtime tomorrow, September 18th. Why is this drop important? Well, it’s an adaptation of a famously silly Noël Coward play involving mediums, gay buffoonery, and a séance! What’s more, this version has “Downton Abbey” star Dan Stevens in the lead, as the queer-coded Charles Condomine, a novelist who hopes that by inviting a strange clairvoyant named Madame Arcati to his home, he’ll bust through his writer’s block. It doesn’t quite work, but it does make for a few good laughs

For the thrillseekers: Do you like thrills? Explosions? Cars? Are you celebrating the 10th anniversary of Drive this very week? Well in that case, the Mary Elizabeth Winstead vehicle Kate may hit the spot. When a trained assassin gets poisoned on her last day working for the Yakuza (lol), she uses her last hours of life to exact bloody revenge on her killers. This neon-lit slasher features kicks, kills, and a whole lot of bisexual lighting. See also: Winstead’s extremely sapphic haircut.

For the Sydney Sweeney-heads: If haven’t fallen in love with “White Lotus” star Sydney Sweeney yet, I can’t help you. From the minute Sweeney stepped onscreen in 2018’s “Everything Sucks” as a closeted queer teen, we were hooked. We thought, “everybody should cast Sydney Sweeney in everything for the next five years!” And that’s exactly what happened. The new Amazon Prime movie The Voyeurs gives Sweeney yet another chance to shine as Pippa, a bisexual optometrist who gets sucked into a deadly threesome after watching her neighbors have sex. While the film hasn’t gotten great reviews so far, it’s sufficiently DePalma-esque to make the ride worthwhile.

For the bingers: There’s just something about an MLM, don’t you think? If you’ve devoured absolutely every article, interview, and exposé concerning the leggings empire LuLaRoe, the 4-part docuseries “LuLaRich” is for you. It’s a story of epic rise and fall, in which a Mormon couple finds a way to market a totally unsustainable business scheme to stay-at-home moms across the country. How did they do it? Well, by lying! A lot! Although “LuLaRich” is a fascinating watch, take heed: it’s a bit gutting to watch so many vulnerable women get sucked into what is, at the end of the day, an obvious cult.

For literally everyone else: If you missed Season 1 of “The Morning Show” on Apple TV, it’s understandable. Unlike “Ted Lasso,” this Apple Original has flown under the radar for the past year, despite being a delightfully campy vehicle for Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston as dueling news anchors duking it out on live television. Come for the star-studded cast, including a deeply sexy Billy Crudup as an icy network exec. Think “The Newsroom,” but good, and with hot people.
