Hong Kong’s Queer Scene Toes Line Between Freedom and Uncertainty

· Updated on March 23, 2023

In his latest visual exploration of global queer nightlife, director Samuel Douek pulls back the veil on another city that never seems to sleep: Hong Kong.

World banking capital by day, deliciously seedy urban playground by night, Hong Kong comes alive after dark with a relatively open and supportive queer scene that belies the repressive attitudes and policies of mainland China.

Through interviews and kaleidoscopic club footage, Hong Kong Nights depicts a scene that remains vibrant and inclusiveeven in the face of anxiety about the city’s imminent absorption into mainland China and the implications that will have for the LGBTQ community.
