During the 2025 American Music Awards show, musician and actress Jennifer Lopez kissed two backup dancers, including a woman. 

Lopez, who is recently divorced, led an opening performance backed by a medley of popular tracks from the past year, including lesbian icon Chappell Roan’s “Hot To Go,” musical sensation Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em,” and former Disney star Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso.”

At the end of the performance, Lopez kissed both a man and a woman—which she later revealed in an interview with Variety that it was entirely her idea. 

“I love it… it was a narrative, there was a little story going on there,” she recounted. “I like the idea of losing control, she holds me for a while and I lose control… And if you look at it, you can follow a little story.”

Just as people have done with many celebrities prior, some are accusing Lopez of queerbaiting with this kiss. Queerbaiting refers to when fictional shows wink and nudge at the idea of a character being LGBTQ+ without actually depicting queerness.

Lopez is, however, a real person, and is under no obligation to share her sexuality with millions of strangers. Who she kisses is entirely her business.

Lopez has been a strong supporter of queer rights. In a previous interview with Variety, she said of queer kids dressing up as her character, “It’s not weird at all. It’s one of the things I understood about the role that I think maybe other actors couldn’t; understanding what you mean to your fans when you sing music, when you do movies.” Lopez also has a nonbinary child named Emme, who Lopez has shown tremendous support to.

“You mean something to them,” Lopez continued, “and you have a relationship with them, where they save you and you save them. But they’re also doing it for you.”
