A House Ethics complaint filed this week by American Muckrakers PAC alleges that Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) had inappropriate relationships with three staffers, including two women, and paid one $200,000 in hush money. In a video posted to social media, Boebert accused the press of running a “smear” and called the complaint a “scam.” She claimed that the ethics filing’s language about perjury penalties was a deliberate trick designed to generate headlines, and she characterized media coverage as the work of “sloppy, desperate, obsessive” reporters who fell for what she called a fabricated filing.
Boebert’s frustration appeared particularly focused on media outlets naming her staffers in coverage of the allegations. She said journalists “crossed a line” by publishing staff names and expressed concern about the impact on their families, framing the media’s reporting as an attack on her household rather than coverage of a public ethics complaint.
This confrontation reflects an ongoing pattern. In 2023, American Muckrakers PAC published separate allegations against Boebert, prompting her to denounce the group publicly. The PAC subsequently sued her for defamation; the lawsuit was settled in 2024 under undisclosed terms. Boebert has also built a documented record of anti-LGBTQ+ advocacy, including introducing anti-LGBTQ+ riders to appropriations bills and voting consistently against LGBTQ+ protections.
