Britney’s not going back to work, bitch.
The iconic pop singer, who hasn’t released an album since 2016’s Glory, took to social media to announce she won’t be making new music anytime soon. In fact, she may never return to the music industry again.
“Just so we’re clear most of the news is trash!!!” Spears wrote in an Instagram caption. “They keep saying I’m turning to random people to do a new album … I will never return to the music industry!!!”
The statement came amid rumors that Spears was collaborating with Charli XCX and Julia Michaels on a new album to be released later this year. So yes, those “random people” she referred to aren’t so random after all.

This isn’t to say we won’t hear new songs from Spears anymore — she just won’t be the one singing them. In the same post, she revealed that nowadays, she much prefers ghostwriting music for other artists than writing it for herself.
“When I write, I write for fun or I write for other people!!!” Spears wrote. “For those of you who have read my book, there’s loads that you don’t know about me … I’ve written over 20 songs for other people the past two years!!! I’m a ghostwriter and I honestly enjoy it that way!!!”
Then again, Spears did release a new single this year: “Mind Your Business,” a collaboration with will.i.am. Was it just a fluke, or is Spears exaggerating her distance from the music industry?
Either way, though fans are heartbroken at the prospect of no more Britney, we can all be happy that Spears is finally living life the way she wants to. Between being freed from her father’s conservatorship in 2021, divorcing her husband Sam Asghari earlier this year, and releasing her bestselling memoir The Woman In Me, Spears is starting a new chapter in her life. It just won’t be one where she takes center stage.
“People are also saying MY BOOK WAS RELEASED WITHOUT MY APPROVAL ILLEGALLY and that’s far from the truth … have you read the news these days ???” Spears wrote to conclude her post. “I’m so LOVED and blessed !!!”
