Carrie Coon claps back at transphobes on Trans Day of Visibility: “Get a life”

Carrie Coon has quickly become a fan favorite on The White Lotus — and her standing up for trans rights on social media has made her a fan favorite off the screen, too.

On Monday, Coon took to the internet to recognize International Transgender Day of Visibility. After reposting a graphic reading, “TRANS PEOPLE ARE NOT A THREAT, TRANSPHOBIA IS,” Coon wrote her own message of solidarity with the trans community.

“On this International Day of Transgender Visibility, remember that offering civil rights and protections to our transgender community in the United States doesn’t take anything away from anybody and beware of anyone who tells you otherwise. #TransDayOfVisibility,” she wrote.

Though Coon’s post was met with love and appreciation from the queer community, it also attracted the transphobic trolls. One user asked Coon if she thinks trans women should compete in women’s sports, then adding, “If you think so, then you’re WAY off base and obviously never competed in any sports EVER.”

Coon quickly showed them that they didn’t know what they were talking about. “You’ve signed on to this culture war to ‘protect’ girls from approximately 5 athletes in middle and high school? Get a life,” she wrote. “I played college sports. I looked like a boy until I was 17 and the gym teacher kept putting [me] on the boys team. The only thing it ever made me was better.”

Indeed, while attending Mount Union University, Coon played soccer and ran track. She’s also correct that despite what anti-trans keyboard warriors would have you think, trans women are an incredibly small proportion of the United States’ athletic population: in 2023, researcher and medical physicist Joanna Harper told Newsweek there were likely fewer than 100 trans people competing in women’s sports at the collegiate level. In K-12 school sports, the figure is even lower: a spokesperson for the ACLU reported only five transgender athletes competing on girls’ teams across all of America.

Earlier in the day, Coon also corrected a White Lotus watcher who seemed to think series creator Mike White “appears to find trans and non-binary (and the types of people drawn to it) on a spectrum of annoying to unhinged.” The user, a self-described history PhD student named Lottie, based her claim on Coon’s recent story of a scene being cut in which it was revealed that her White Lotus character Laurie’s child is nonbinary.

“Lottie is not correct about the plot here,” Coon wrote in response to Lottie’s theory. “She jumps to a lot of conclusions without much context, which is surprising for a historian. She’s right that Mike White does not shy away from divisive topics & engages with them thoughtfully & unexpectedly, unlike the example below.”
