Here’s how Chappell Roan’s latest song helped her connect to her roots

When Chappell Roan took the stage at Saturday Night Live to premiere a brand new song, it was clear we were witnessing history. Set to a country fiddle and trash-talking the laziness of “country boy quitters,” Roan’s new song “The Giver” instantly became an anthem for all the sapphic tops out there.

Now, in a recent Q&A, Roan dug into how penning a country song helped her connect with her upbringing in Missouri.

While being interviewed by Brandi Carlile at the Grammy Museum alongside her producer Dan Nigro, Roan talked about writing “The Giver” and assured fans that it would be released soon. “It’s country, and we played it on SNL,” Roan said. “It will come out! It will come out; don’t worry. But that was so fun to write.”

“I got to bring what I knew to the table, ‘cause I’m a country girl,” Roan continued. “So I got to be like, ‘No, no, no, like, let me show you some country songs.’”

That’s where Nigro chimed in, saying “I was given a lot of homework.” What did that homework look like? He wouldn’t say: “We can’t give away our references.”

Nigro did, however, discuss his and Roan’s writing process for songs including “The Giver,” “Pink Pony Club,” and “Naked in Manhattan.”

“A lot of the songs are written on the piano,” NIgro said. “Even if they are like a big dance production, the song is still taken from, ‘We’re gonna get the verse and we’re gonna get the chorus right before we even think about producing this.’”

In a separate interview earlier this year, Roan discussed how she grew up with country music, but only recently got back into the genre.

“I really started getting into music whenever I was, like, in high school,” Roan told Riverfront Times back in May. “It was just based on like Christian rock and some country, but I just didn’t really identify with it at the time. Now I identify with country music in such a different way. I think it’s so camp and fun.”
