Lucy Dacus’ new video “Best Guess” is currently a burning topic with mixed reviews among queer people of color. Dacus is a queer, American alternative singer known for her activism of the LGBTQ+ community and exploration of coming-of-age themes, especially on her 2021 album, Home Video.
Many were experiencing full-on lesbian meltdown after a new video dropped this week starring several masc-presenting lesbians, including a few famous names such as Towa Bird and Cara Delevingne.

The video, released in the lead up to Dacus’s upcoming album Forever is a Feeling, is an excellent effort to showcase the beauty of masc-presenting lesbians adorned in sleek suits and silver jewelry. The close-up shots of the featured guests were the cherry on top, allowing viewers to appreciate just how versatile mascs are in their clothing, hair, and sapphic presentation.

However, despite how progressive the music video might seem, it didn’t feature any dark-skinned masc-presenting lesbians. Many queer folks of color weren’t too pleased with this outcome because they felt underrepresented and isolated.
The queer community has an unfortunate history of excluding queer people of color, especially when they are of darker skin tones. A lot of darker-skinned queer people suffer from colorism within the community and not being seen as desirable, which is why the video rubbed many the wrong way.
While representation is essential, it’s worth doing more to make sure the entire community can see themselves reflected. The queer community still has so much work to be done when it comes to inclusion, and exploring stories that matter and resonate and include queer people of color in all shades is a must at this point in the music industry.
