Madonna is an undeniable gay icon, but people often forget that she’s queer herself. Now, a viral story from her ex-lover is giving the internet a crash course on Madonna’s sapphic past.
In docuseries In Vogue: The 90s, which tells the story of the ‘90s fashion industry, former model Jenny Shimizu dished on hooking up with Madonna in Europe.
“I mean, you’re not gonna say no to Madonna in the ’90s,” Shimizu said in the series’ sixth and final episode. “Not only was it great feeling like a high class hooker — because really it was.”
“You’d get a phone call like, ‘Hey can you meet me at my Paris show. You’re in Europe right?’ So I’d be like, ‘Yeah, I’m just finishing Prada. Right after Prada I’ll catch a plane over,’” she continued. “And I would. I’d go over to her hotel, to the Ritz, at like 4 in the morning, have sex, and then fly back to Milan.”

Twice a week, our newsletter will bring you the pulse of queer culture, from the tastemakers to the groundbreakers.
Related“There is no drink menu. Every gay bar has the same drink menu,” insisted comedian Jake Cornell in a viral TikTok.Gaga talked to Bill Gates on his Netflix show about living in an age of misinformation.
When Shimizu’s story made its way to social media, plenty of folks relished the opportunity to spread the word about Madonna’s sexuality. Not only did Madonna champion the rights of queer folks in an era of intense homophobia, but she’s long been part of the community herself.

Meanwhile, others are marveling at Shimizu’s impeccable roster. Beyond Madonna, Shimizu also dated Angelina Jolie during the ‘90s. How did Shimizu pull two of the decade’s biggest icons? Only she knows — but her level of game may be unmatched in all of human history.
