Amid the excitement fans are feeling over tonight’s impending trailer drop for Wicked: For Good, one of the series’ stars chimed in with, debatably, an even more pressing announcement: every main character in Wicked is queer.

So said Marissa Bode, who plays Nessarose. In a recent interview for INTO’s own 25 Under 25 series, Bode shared her opinion on the queer makeup of Wicked’s cast of characters.

“The straights are gonna get mad at me for saying this,” Bode said. “But canonically, for me, everybody in the cast, character-wise, is queer in my brain. Like, Elphaba and Galinda were a little too suspicious for me personally. In my brain, there is fruitiness happening there. That’s my personal opinion.”

Now, in a new TikTok, she expanded on her headcanons, getting more specific about what identity she thinks each character holds.

“In response to the article that came out yesterday, where I said I think, in my opinion, that the main characters are all queer in some way — me, in my brain, canonically — these are my thoughts,” Bode began.

“Galinda is a lesbian. Elphaba is bisexual. Nessarose is bisexual. Fiyero is bisexual. Boq is questioning, but queer in some way. Doctor Dillamond: gay,” she said.

Even the musical’s villains are part of the queer community, Bode continued: Madame Morrible is a lesbian who was deeply in love once, but something happened to her love, which is now why she is the way that she is. The Wizard is also questioning, but queer in some way.”

“Those are my thoughts!” she concluded. “I’m joking. But also, no I’m not. Do with that what you will. Goodbye.”

In Bode’s comments section, one fan asked the question on everybody’s lips: “Okay but do you ship Gelphie,” they wondered, referring to the ship between Galinda and Elphaba.

“Oh of course,” Bode replied.

Wicked fans across social media celebrated and agreed with Bode’s theories, particularly praising her outright claim that Galinda is a lesbian. It’s by far the most popular queer theory about the Wicked characters, and fans are hoping that Bode’s statement means it will become canon (or at least be more blatant) in the second movie. Can we get even one Gelphie kiss, please?
