On Tuesday night, pop superstar Miley Cyrus revealed something about her next album that was music to fans’ ears: it will be the gayest project of her career.
At an event Cyrus and Spotify hosted to preview her upcoming album Something Beautiful, a fan reportedly asked Cyrus how gay the album would be. “It’s not only my best album, but my gayest,” she replied, making the world even more hyped for its release.
Delivering the gayest album of her career is a tall order for Cyrus. Will it be gayer than Endless Summer Vacation, which includes the song “River,” an ode to dancing with her gay best friends? Gayer than Plastic Hearts, which brought us the sultry collab “Prisoner” with Dua Lipa (a relationship that may or may not have been the inspiration for Lipa’s hit “Illusion” in return)? Gayer than Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz, Bangerz, and Can’t Be Tamed?
After all, what makes one album gayer than another? It could be the lyrical content. It could be the musical style — the singles we’ve heard so far have an eclectic, disco-tinged sound, which is about as gay as genre can get. Or it could be the era and aesthetic surrounding the actual music, which promise to be absolutely fabulous for Something Beautiful.

Back in November, Cyrus told Harper’s Bazaar that Something Beautiful would be a “hypnotizing and glamorous” visual album, and that she and her team were taking inspiration from Thierry Mugler’s 1995 couture show.
“It’s a concept album that’s an attempt to medicate somewhat of a sick culture through music,” she added.
“The visual component of this is driving the sound,” Cyrus continued. “It was important for me that every song has these healing sound properties. The songs, whether they’re about destruction or heartbreak or death, they’re presented in a way that is beautiful, because the nastiest times of our life do have a point of beauty. They are the shadow, they are the charcoal, they are the shading. You can’t have a painting without highlights and contrast.”
Something Beautiful releases on May 30. Check out the music video for the title track below.
