Onya Nurve says Drag Race is bringing “joy & light” to her incarcerated uncle

RuPaul’s Drag Race is known for bringing drag to the masses, introducing the queer art form to folks who might not ever discover it otherwise. Now, in a viral post, Season 17 queen Onya Nurve told the world that Drag Race is even touching hearts in prison.

Onya took to X to tell the world about a heartwarming call she got from her incarcerated uncle. “My uncle called me from prison to tell me how proud he was & he’s been watching,” she wrote. “Got the whole cell block picking their fav Queen. Cant tell me drag don’t bring joy & light in the darkest places 💕”

“When is my next prison booking,” Onya added in a reply. “I’m trynna shake ass for the inmates tf ✨✨”

Folks in Onya’s replies (including fellow Season 17 queen Hormona Lisa) celebrated the beauty of her story, including the clear power of drag to bring people together. “they say drag is evil and corrupt,” one commenter wrote. “LIES, they just don’t want that joy of freedom/creativity to be universal.”

Onya is coming off of a standout week on Drag Race. In the show’s iconic Snatch Game challenge, she impersonated Eddie Murphy — quite convincingly, might we add — and ultimately took home the win. Folks on social media mused on how Onya’s uncle and his peers in prison must have reacted when she snatched that victory.
