Understanding androsexuality: An identity that is often misunderstood

· Updated on November 17, 2023

Androsexuality is a term used to describe individuals who are sexually attracted to men or masculinity. It is a complex identity that has often been misunderstood and stigmatized in society. However, androsexuality is an important part of the human experience that deserves to be recognized and respected.

Understanding our own sexual identity and those of others is a vital step towards fostering inclusivity. Let’s explore what it means to be androsexual and how to know if you might identify with this emerging identity.

Defining androsexuality

Androsexuality is a sexual orientation where an individual feels attraction towards masculinity. Stereotypical masculine traits that androsexuals might find attractive include but are not limited to physical traits such as a strong jawline and broad shoulders, mannerisms like confidence and assertiveness, or even behavior associated with traditionally male-dominated fields such as sports or engineering.

This attraction transcends the traditional binary genders and includes anyone displaying masculine traits – be it men, women, or nonbinary individuals.

Furthermore, similar to other sexual orientations, androsexuality exists on a spectrum. This means that individuals can experience varying levels of attraction towards masculinity. Some may identify as exclusively androsexual, while others may feel more fluid in their attractions.

Androsexuals can be gay, straight, cis, trans, or anything in between

While there is often overlap between androsexuality and male homosexuality, the two terms should not be used interchangeably. The cornerstone of this identity is the attraction towards masculinity, irrespective of the gender identity of the person embodying these traits.

This means that being androsexual doesn’t restrict your own gender identity or sexuality. Androsexuals can identify as cisgender, transgender, nonbinary, or intersex. They can also identify simultaneously as gay, straight, bi, pan, or any other sexual orientation.

For example, a straight man might be attracted to a woman with masculine features, while a sapphic woman might be attracted to a transgender man. In both cases, these individuals could also identify as androsexuals due to their attraction toward masculinity.

The opposite of androsexual is gynosexual, or the attraction to femininity and feminine traits.

Celebrities someone attracted to masculinity might like

It’s important to note that attraction is subjective and varies from person to person. However, for illustrative purposes, here are examples of celebrities who exude strong masculine traits that an androsexual person might find attractive:

Idris Elba

Known for his roles in “Luther” and “The Wire,” Idris Elba exhibits a strong masculine presence on and off screen.

Ruby Rose

The “Orange Is The New Black” star identifies as genderfluid but often presents a more traditionally masculine appearance.

Chris Hemsworth

Famous for his role as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Hemsworth’s physical strength and masculinity make him attractive to many individuals.

Janelle Monáe

While Janelle Monáe identifies as non-binary, they exude an androgynous style and confidence that might appeal to androsexual individuals.

The androsexual pride flag

The androsexual pride flag with three stripes, from top to bottom: sky blue, brown, and lavender.

The androsexual flag is a significant symbol of identity and pride for those who identify as androsexual.

The flag features three vibrant stripes, each with its own unique color and meaning.

  • The top stripe is a sky blue, representing attraction to men or masculinity.
  • The middle stripe is brown, symbolizing stability and support.
  • The bottom stripe is lavender, reflecting attraction regardless of gender identity.

While the origins of the flag are not well-documented, it’s believed to have been designed by the same individual who created the gynesexual flag.

Addressing challenges faced by androsexuals

Androsexual individuals, like many within the LGBTQIA+ community, can face potential discrimination and stigma related to their sexual identity. The idea that being androsexual means only being attracted to men often leads to the invalidation of their identity.

Additionally, the societal pressure to conform to traditional gender roles can make it difficult for androsexual individuals to express their true selves. This can lead to feelings of isolation and self-doubt.

While one can argue that labels are limiting, they also serve as a tool for recognition and validation. For many androsexual individuals, having a term to describe their attraction can be empowering and affirming.

Explore your identity with an open mind

It’s important for young queer individuals exploring their sexual orientation to have safe spaces where they can freely express themselves. This involves promoting open communication, respecting how individuals identify themselves, and providing resources that support self-acceptance and understanding.

Androsexuality, which you know by now is centered on attraction to masculinity regardless of gender, expands our understanding of sexual identities.

By educating ourselves and others about these diverse orientations, we can create a more inclusive society and support young queer individuals in their journey of self-discovery.

So let’s celebrate and embrace the diversity of identities within the LGBTQ+ community.
