Woke Filling?

Sandwichgate just reached a new level of absurdity

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but sandwiches are woke now. That, at least, is what UK conservative tabloid The Daily Mail claims in a new article arguing that Gen Z is abandoning traditional sandwiches for “woke” fillings—whatever that means. And Gen Z has responded as Gen Z does best: by absolutely roasting the ‘news’ outlet online.

On Monday, The Daily Mail published an article with the headline, “Now Gen Z are waging war on our sandwiches!” Citing the Great British Sandwich Study by UK bread bakery Allinson’s, a survey that looked into the country’s sandwich eating habits, The Daily Mail claimed that Gen Z are deliberately refusing classic sandwiches for “fancy woke fillings.”

What exactly constitutes fancy woke fillings? According to The Daily Mail, the sandwiches representing the good old days conservatives are so desperate to get back to are your basic “ham and mustard or cheese and onion.” By contrast, Gen Z likes their sandwiches with a little rizz.

The so-called “fancy woke fillings” essentially boil down to “exotic” items like chicken, avocado, peppers and continental cheeses (swiss, gouda, etc). The spoiled youths are also prone to heat up their sandwiches, rather than enjoy them cold like their grandfathers did in the trenches.

With their woke eating habits exposed, Gen Z got online to express a collective what the f*ck.

"Is this the woke hotline? I'd like to report a sandwich, please"

The survey was, naturally, intended as a way to bring people together over their mutual love of sandwiches. But if there’s a divisive anti-woke angle to be had, no matter how bizarre or inappropriate, leave it to the right wing press to dig it up.

“We are truly a nation of sandwich lovers,” Allinson’s wrote in the survey.

“Regardless of what fillings we put inside, how we choose to serve or slice them, the humble sandwich has been a mealtime mainstay for centuries – and will be for centuries to come.”
