Love to See Love

Sense8 star Brian J Smith shares heartwarming boyfriend reveal

In an uplifting social media tribute, Sense8 star Brian J Smith has shared that he’s in a relationship with Matt Consalvo, calling the fellow actor “the love of my life.”

In a series of Instagram stories on Monday, captured by fan account @brianjsmithbrasil, Smith shared a photo of himself in a hospital awaiting knee surgery. Consalvo was there, beaming by his bedside.

“Surgery day! Couldn’t have done it without the love of my life,” Smith wrote.

The pair may have been dating at least as far back as July, according to a photo taken by a friend.

In addition to playing Will Gorski on the hit queer series Sense8, Smith demonstrated his action hero chops in The Matrix Revolutions and Jason Bourne spinoff series Treadstone. Recently, he took up the director’s chair for a documentary about Fire Island Pines, A House Is Not A Disco. He currently stars in the Hulu thriller series Class of ’09 alongside Looking star Raúl Castillo.

In 2019, Smith shared his coming out story in an interview with Attitude. “I was terrified,” he said. “At school, I really couldn’t fit in anywhere. I wasn’t a jock or a nerd,” he says. “Forget about any LGBTQ union or groups. There was absolutely nothing. I was completely alone. I heard all the names: p*ssy, f*ggot.”

Things turned around when he confided in his parents and found much-needed support. “I was surprised,” he recalled. “When I came out to my parents they were wonderful. They said they were just waiting for me to say something. They were a lot more advanced than I gave them credit for. I think that’s when I became OK with it, too. Just in terms of being, ‘Oh that’s the world, it’s not as dangerous as I thought it was.’”

Consalvo, meanwhile, plays Officer Meyers on the long-running procedural Blue Bloods. He has also had roles in the HBO alternate 1940s history series The Plot Against America and the indie horror film Adam & the Water.

Here’s hoping Smith has a swift recovery from surgery. Luckily he’ll have the love of his life there to nurse him back to health.
