The people’s princess, Ayo Edebiri, is Luca Guadagnino’s next big star, and we’re not mad at it. The award-winning actress has starred in critically acclaimed projects, such as The Bear and Inside Out 2, to name a few. Given Edebiri’s versatility, it’s not hard to see why her filmography piqued Guadagnino’s interest, but you’d be shocked to know which role captured his eye.
Speaking to W Magazine, the well-loved director stated, “I had seen Ayo in Bottoms,” and continued, “I immediately thought, Who is she? Where is she? I needed to meet her!”
Bottoms was the 2023 smash hit movie about two lesbian high schoolers, Josie (portrayed by Edebiri) and PJ (Rachel Sennott), who started a girls’ fight club to meet girls and lose their virginities. The light-hearted sapphic film provided the highs and lows of dating, peer pressure, and the complexities of girlhood and friendship. The film is somewhat cheesy, but who cares — we deserve sappy, messy sapphic romance movies!

But it’s no secret that Guadagnino has an eye for scenery and depicting unconventional yet captivating queer romances, as he’s done with Challengers (2024), Queer (2024), and Call Me By Your Name (2017). It makes sense how he could’ve seen Edebiri’s amazing performance and knew he needed to work with her.
Guadagnino’s thriller After The Hunt, starring Ayo Edebiri and a star-studded cast, will be released this October. We can’t wait to see what magic the two will create!
