There is officially going to be a sequel to Red White & Royal Blue. Both the director and writer announced yesterday at a panel event that a second movie was in the works. Prime posted the news to its official social media accounts late last night, sending fans into a frenzy.

Red White & Royal Blue first arrived in book form in 2019. Written by Casey McQuiston, the romantic novel focuses on a relationship between Alex, son of a US President, and Prince Henry, third in line to the throne in England.

Amazon Prime turned it into a movie, starring Taylor Zakhar-Perez as Alex and Nicholas Galitzine as Henry, last year.

The movie proved a hit for the streaming platform and fans have been clambering for a sequel.

On Thursday, cast and crew attended an official ‘For Your Consideration’ event in Culver, California in the hopes of earning Primetime Emmy nominations for the movie.

During a panel event, when asked about a second movie, director Matthew López said, “Yes, there’s gonna be a sequel.”

“There’s going to be a sequel to the film,” book author Casey McQuiston added. “Matthew and I are writing it together. And that’s all we can say!”

This was followed by the Prime announcement last night.

Here are a few of the reactions.

Galitzine talks about his queer performances

Variety confirms that Galitzine and Zakhar-Perez are set to return for the sequel. Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter are producing the Red, White & Royal Blue, along with Michael McGrath and López. McQuiston will executive produce.

Meanwhile, this week, in a new interview with GQ, Galitzine talked about the fact he’s played several queer roles in recent years. Besides Red White & Royal Blue, he’s also in Mary & George on TV and played a closeted rugby player in the movie Handsome Devil. He also played a bisexual teen in the 2020 horror, The Craft: Legacy.

“I identify as a straight man, but I have been a part of some incredible queer stories,” he said to British GQ. “I felt a sense of uncertainty sometimes about whether I’m taking up someone’s space, and perhaps guilt. At the same time, I see those characters as not solely their sexuality.”

Galitzine also said he felt slightly intimidated playing opposite the handsome Zakhar Perez in Red White & Royal Blue.

“Look, I can speak about this ‘cause Taylor’s a close friend of mine,” he said. “But Taylor is like an Adonis. It was difficult in some aspects, being so closely compared to him.”

There’s no word yet on when the Red White & Royal Blue sequel will premiere.
