If you’re anything like me, you probably have a very idealized version of romance, often setting you up for disappointment that your life isn’t more like a movie, but in the case of also being a trans woman, you wish there were more movies about your life in particular.
It is for that reason that Boy Meets Girl is an absolute gem when it comes to queer romantic comedies. The 2014 movie is about a trans woman from Kentucky named Ricky who has big dreams of moving to New York City and attending a school for fashion design. Ricky also has aspirations of finding love but has trouble finding the right guy. Ricky’s best friend, Robbie, jokingly tells her to start dating women instead, and as soon as he says that the main love interest for most of the film, Francesca, walks into her life and the coffee shop she works at.
While it isn’t the best rom-com in the world, the fact that we are seeing trans representation in this genre is something worth celebrating. Ricky’s character and her struggles in this film are so intensely relatable that I couldn’t help but get emotional. It of course wouldn’t have been possible without the performance of actress Michelle Hendley in creating a character audiences want to root for throughout the film.

It all culminates in the film’s beautiful ending where Robbie professes his love to Ricky after hinting at it throughout the film with their characters’ will-they-or-won’t-they chemistry, making it even more rewarding when they finally get together and live happily ever after.
In a world filled with so much pain and hatred toward those who are trans, it is pleasant to see trans people find happiness even if it is on the silver screen. If you would like to watch a beautiful feel-good love story then I could not recommend this movie enough.
