I'm OK, You're OK

Dakota Johnson goes queer in sweet trailer for her new movie, out for Pride Month

The trailer just dropped for Am I OK?, a new coming-out dramedy starring Dakota Johnson.

The movie marks lesbian comedian Tig Notaro’s directorial debut. She co-directed with her wife, Stephanie Allynne (The L Word). It’s based on the real-life experiences of Lauren Pomerantz, an Emmy-winning writer for The Ellen DeGeneres Show. The movie reflects on its lead character Lucy’s struggle to date, come out, and embrace her sexuality.

Watch it below. It finds Lucy taking an “”How to know if you’re a lesbian quiz” quiz online and getting emotional over the fact she’s 32 and still unsure of her sexuality. Her best friend, Jane (Sonoya Mizuno), encourages her to be brave and explore her feelings and attractions.

Besides starring in movies such as Fifty Shades of Grey and the recent Madame Web, many of you will, of course, remember Johnson for an infamous appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

In an episode screened in 2019, DeGeneres chided Johnson for not inviting her to her birthday party. Johnson, bemused, replied, “Actually, no, that’s not the truth, Ellen”. She went on to say that she made great efforts to invite DeGeneres but got no response. Johnson also said that Notaro was among the guests at her party, adding she was her “favorite comedian.”

Ouch.

According to Entertainment Weekly, it turns out that Pomerantz was also, coincidentally, present on the Ellen DeGeneres set that day.

“She was fantastic”

“I took my whole coming out late story, and I used that, and I really based it on a real-life friendship with my best friend Jessica [Elbaum], who is also a producer on this movie,” Pomerantz told EW. “I started writing it as a friendship movie based on our friendship. We had sort of a big fight, and then we’re friends again, but then simultaneously, I was struggling to come out. And so I realized that was the story that I really wanted to tell.”

Pomerantz praised Johnson’s performance, saying, “She was fantastic, and I’m just incredibly grateful that she did it. She captured everything I could ever have hoped for in that character — the confusion, the insecurity, all of the inner turmoil I think really came out.”

Am I OK? Has been acquired by Max and will arrive June 6, during Pride Month. The movie actually premiered back in 2022 at the Sundance Film Festival. The fact it’s taken over two years to secure distribution is perhaps reason to be cautious. However, it’s currently got a solid 79% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on over 60 reviews from critics. That, and the adorable trailer, makes us excited to check it out.
