Four queer romcoms to watch when you need a laugh (i.e. right now)

The king of queer cinema has spoken! In a recent interview with Konbini for Video Club, Luca Gudaginino declared, “I think every great movie is gay.” And we agree— He’s right, and he should say it!

Not only is every movie gay, but every gay movie has the power to help you forget all the horrible, terrible, no-good things that are happening right now politically—for a tight 90 minutes, at least. Here are four great queer comedy movies to watch and experience the messy, cheesy, humorous complexities of queer romance.

Bottoms (2023)

If you’re interested in a messy sapphic comedy romance, Bottoms is a hilarious adventure between two high school best friends starring Ayo Edebiri as Josie and Rachel Sennott as PJ. The two start a fight club in hopes of meeting girls and losing their virginity.

TW: Blood, Gore, Slurs, Sexual Situations

Love, Simon (2018)

If you’re interested in a lighthearted gay comedy, Love, Simon is the perfect coming-of-age film. It stars Nick Robinson, who plays Simon Spier, a closeted teen who unknowingly falls in love with an anonymous classmate online. TW: Forced outing.

But I’m a Cheerleader (1999)

If you’re interested in a bizarre lesbian comedy, But I’m a Cheerleader is a flawless transition in discovering queer classics. The movie stars Natasha Lyonne as Megan, who is seemingly the perfect daughter until her parents find out she’s a lesbian and send her off to a boot camp in hopes it’ll make her straight. However, she starts to fall in love with a girl named Graham, portrayed by Clea DuVall. RuPaul even shows up as a camp counselor!

(Disclaimer: The movie’s conceit is outdated and can be viewed as offensive to some.)

Crush (2022)

If you’re looking for a cheesy sapphic comedy, Crush is a cute coming-of-age that delivers the right amount of enemies to friends to lovers. It stars Rowan Blanchard as Paige Evans, Auli’i Cravalho as AJ Campos, and Isabella Ferreira as Gabriela Campos. Paige is an art student who desperately wants to attend a prestigious college, but when she’s forced to join the track team, she tries to get closer to her crush, Gabriela. However, along the way, she starts falling for Gabriela’s sister, AJ, who dislikes her.

Especially in today’s climate, queer people deserve to be messy and have fun movies that make us laugh without taking things too seriously.
