Margaret Qualley and Aubrey Plaza in a film together is enough to get anyone excited. That movie being sapphic is just the cherry on top.
The upcoming movie Honey Don’t!, directed by Ethan Coen and co-written with his wife Tricia Cooke, will follow Qualley as private investigator Honey O’Donahue, with Plaza playing a mysterious woman. Chris Evans will also star as a cult leader. Not much is known about the plot beyond that — including the nature of Qualley and Plaza’s on-screen relationship — but their sheer casting in a lesbian film together is enough to have fans hyped.
Entertainment with an edge
Whether you’re into indie comics, groundbreaking music, or queer cinema, we’re here to keep you in the loop.
Honey Don’t! is a spiritual sequel to 2024’s Drive-Away Dolls, which also starred Qualley as a lesbian on a madcap road trip. In a 2023 interview with Collider, Coen and Cooke described their plans to create a trilogy of lesbian films, with Drive-Away Dolls being the first and the then-unannounced Honey Don’t! being the second.
“Over the past 20 years, we’ve been writing this lesbian B movie trilogy,” Cooke said. “Not really a trilogy, but the idea was to write three queer B movies that I always thought would just kind of sit in the drawer and our kids would look at one day when they were old and get some laughs. And now we’ve made one of them.”
“And we have another one written,” Coen added. “The problem with writing two is then you’re obliged to do a third because nobody does two. You gotta do a trilogy. I don’t even know the word for two corresponding to a trilogy.” (For the record, it’s “duology.”)
Honey Don’t! was filmed in 2024, but it has no set release date. For now, we’ll just have to think of Qualley and Plaza co-starring and longingly sigh.
