Nicholas Galitzine on how Harry Styles’ dating life inspired him

Nicholas Galitzine had plenty of inspiration for his latest rom-com role thanks to former boybander Harry Styles.

In an interview with Buzzfeed UK, Galitzine stopped by to chat about his upcoming Prime Video romantic comedy, The Idea of You. Starring Galitzine and Oscar winner Anne Hathaway, the film follows 40-year-old single mom, Solène (Hathaway) who embarks on a whirlwind romance with the 24-years-old Hayes Campbell (Galitzine), the lead singer of immensely popular boy band August Moon. Based on the 2017 novel by Robinne Lee, the film is already getting plenty of buzz thanks to its steamy trailer, but with Galitzine’s recent interview, the Internet is talking about The Idea of You even more.

In his interview, Galitzine was asked if his character is based on the former One Direction band member, Styles. Galitizine’s answer: yes and no. Ultimately, Galitzine’s Hayes is inspired by Styles, but the 29-year-old actor wanted to ensure that his depiction of Hayes a poor rendition of the “Watermelon Sugar” singer.

“We tried to create a character that felt, you know, maybe akin to Harry, in a sense that he’s a younger man dating an older woman,” Galitzine explained. “It was important to create someone who felt new, original and not a sort of shoddy impersonation of a person that we know really well.”

Noted, Mr. Galitizine; however, the internet isn’t fully convinced that Styles isn’t direct inspiration for Hayes. Since leaving One Direction behind, Styles has experience plenty of international popularity as a solo pop star. He’s also kept his name in the tabloids due to speculation over his sexuality and his relationships with women older than him.

Styles dated filmmaker and actor Olivia Wilde, who he sports a 10-year difference between them, from 2021 to 2022. However, prior to that, he was in a brief relationship with English TV presenter Caroline Flack in 2011, which garnered backlash as Styles was 17-years-old and Flack was 31-years-old. Now, Styles is dating actor Taylor Russell (who’s the same age as Styles) and has seemingly moved on from these relationships, but it doesn’t mean that they haven’t become the source material for this upcoming film.

The Idea of You premieres on Prime Video on May 2.
