Since Wicked hit theaters this past Friday, it’s all the gay internet can think about. From Ariana Grande’s pitch-perfect comedy to Cynthia Erivo’s jaw-dropping vocals, every element of the movie seemed tailor-made for queer folks (and we’ve been holding space for the lyrics of “Defying Gravity” all week). The thirstier among us also had plenty of eye candy to enjoy, including Jonathan Bailey’s insanely flirtatious rendition of “Dancing Through Life” and general heartthrobbery as Fiyero.
Fans can hardly wait to see the rest of the story unfold in Wicked: Part Two, which comes out next November — but in the meantime, a new hint from director Jon M. Chu is building even more hype for the sequel.
In a spoiler-filled interview with Variety, Chu revealed that Part Two will be “a doozy.”
“You’re getting the meat,” he said. “I did not know the context of where we’d be in society right now. It becomes eight times more relevant than before when you’re talking about truth and consequences of making the right or wrong choices. It’s intense.”
Entertainment with an edge
Whether you’re into indie comics, groundbreaking music, or queer cinema, we’re here to keep you in the loop.
Beyond Chu’s comments on the film’s political relevance, fans are fixating on his strange turn of phrase: “You’re getting the meat.” Chu likely meant the “meat” of the narrative, but the gays can’t help but wonder if (and hope that) it’s a double entendre. One fan took it as confirmation that Fiyero will bare it all in the sequel: “Jonathan Bailey full-frontal in Wicked 2 thank the lord,” he wrote, and several other fans were on the same page.
It’s not the first time we’ve gotten hints at Bailey being nude while in character. He infamously teased fans with the existence of an “amazing photo that no one’s ever gonna see” wearing nothing but his Fiyero boots. Fingers crossed, folks — we’ve got a long year ahead of us.
Related“Girls are a mystery to me,” Bailey said in the endearingly awkward decade-old interview.“You never know!” Grande said, throwing in a limp wrist for good measure.
