Last year, trans actress Tommy Dorfman, best known for her role as Ryan Shaver in the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why, made her directorial debut with the film I Wish You All the Best, based on the Mason Deaver novel of the same name.
The film follows a nonbinary teen who is kicked out of their home by their conservative parents after coming out to them. With nowhere else to go, the teen moves in with their estranged older sister and her husband, embarking on a journey of self-discovery.
The film first premiered at the South by Southwest film festival on March 8, 2024. At the festival, I Wish You All the Best was highly praised by critics, which only drives the suspense and anticipation for a public release among members of the LGBTQ+ community.
On Wednesday, more than a full year since the movie’s festival premiere, the Instagram page for the movie posted a story that read “november” against a black background. This was quite vague and cryptic, but has led those following the film’s release to speculate that the public release is going to be in November 2025.
Entertainment with an edge

The film stars Miles Gutierrez-Riley (Agatha All Along) and Corey Fogelmanis (Girl Meets World). It is described as a heartwarming film that brings to attention the plight that LGBTQ+ kids who grow up in conservative environments face, while at the same time providing a sense of hope with the director’s messaging. As Dorfman puts it, “safety can be found in many places.”
Dorfman describes being one of the few openly transgender directors as both a gift and a curse: “I wish there were more of us, but there will be,” she said at SXSW. “It’s exciting, though, to be part of this next generation of creators and filmmakers entering this space and telling more human experiences.”
