Broadway Beckons

Despite once again playing a teenager, Kit Connor is looking all grown-up in his upcoming Broadway debut in Romeo + Juliet. Starring alongside West Side Story’s Rachel Zegler, Connor takes the role of Romeo to new romantic heights, showing off his intimate side in a new trailer for the production.

Romeo + Juliet appears to be a modern day retelling of the classic doomed lovers tale. The music video trailer, set to the Bleachers’ song “Tiny Moves,” shows Romeo arriving at Juliet’s house in a suburban neighborhood, ringing a doorbell labeled “Capulet.” From there, the couple get into cute teenage mischief, like jumping on beds, trying on outfits and playing with stuffed animals in a bathtub.

The whole trailer looks about as adorable as your average Heartstopper episode, but queer fans were understandably distracted by one particular aspect.

Connor and Zegler originally teased the production by sharing the letters “R” and “J” on their respective social media feeds back in April. Now, we have much more information on what’s in store for the upcoming show.

The production marks the Broadway debut of Connor and Zegler. It will be directed by Sam Gold and will feature music by Jack Antonoff and Sonya Tayeh.

“The youth are f*cked,” the official synopsis reads. “Left to their own devices in their parents’ world of violent ends, an impulsive pair of star-crossed lovers hurtle towards their inescapable fate. The intoxicating high of passion quickly descends into brutal chaos that can only end one way.”

Following the initial announcement, Gold issued a statement on his vision for the project. “With the presidential election coming up in November, I felt like making a show this fall that celebrates youth and hope, and unleashes the anger young people feel about the world they are inheriting,” he said.
The 16 week engagement will kick off at Circle in the Square Theatre on October 24, with previews beginning as early as September 26. Early access passes are available now through the official website.
