If you haven’t heard about Laverne Cox’s new starring role and co-creator credit on an Amazon sitcom, fear not — you’re about to.
Clean Slate is a new series on Amazon Prime Video, following Cox as Desiree, a trans woman returning from New York to her small Alabama hometown and moving in with her father (George Wallace), who hasn’t seen her since her transition. A trans-positive story like Clean Slate couldn’t have hit our TV screens at a better time, and Cox is the perfect star to bring it to life.
Clean Slate is a series with a lot of heart and a lot of laughs, but so far, it hasn’t seemed to get its flowers from the general public. The series quietly dropped all eight episodes of its first season at the beginning of the month, and now, the internet is rallying to give it more attention. “prime isn’t promoting clean slate at all and it’s such a good show ! if y’all want a black lgbt show to watch i recommend !!!” one X user posted, later adding the series’ trailer and urging the world to watch it.

Speaking to TVLine, Cox shared why now was the perfect time to make the series, along with her personal connection to the narrative. “It would’ve been a different show 10 years ago. I mean, I would’ve been in a different place artistically 10 years ago,” Cox said. “Things happen when they’re supposed to. I really believe in God’s time, not my time.”
“It’s a deeply personal story. Literally, there are stories from my life,” she added. “I think Desiree is really me like 20 years ago, when I was starting therapy, starting to deal with childhood trauma, angry, angry at my mom. And going back to that place of confusion and shame and anger is triggering, and to live in that, when the actor’s job is to live in that — but that is the job, and then we can move on from that.”
“I’m so grateful that I’ve lived a life that I can bring to my work. You really have to live life so then you have something to make art about,” Cox concluded.
