2025 just got blonder.
To say that Legally Blonde‘s Elle Woods is an iconic character is an understatement. From teaching us the infamous “bend and snap,” how to give your resume the perfect scent, or proving that getting into Harvard Law isn’t that hard, Elle is an example of determination, authenticity, and fabulousness. So, there’s no surprise that queer people have idolized her for years.
Entertainment with an edge
Whether you’re into indie comics, groundbreaking music, or queer cinema, we’re here to keep you in the loop twice a week.
Now, after announcing third movie within the Legally Blonde franchise, fans will also get an Elle Woods TV series. At this year’s Amazon Upfront, Witherspoon, donning an Elle-inspired pink two-piece and holding chihuahua, recreated her “bend and snap” move and revealed that a prequel series, titled Elle, would be heading to Prime Video. The series follows the Elle as a high schooler in the ’90s.
Since we all weren’t able to check out Witherspoon’s Amazon Upfront announcement live, we were blessed with a social media post announcing the news. Witherspoon took to Instagram to share the update with the caption, “Before she became the most famous Gemini vegetarian to graduate from Harvard Law, she was just a regular ‘90s high school girl. And all of you are going to get to know her, next year on @primevideo.” The video, paired with the Legally Blonde opening song “Perfect Day,” shows Witherspoon getting ready for the Amazon Upfronts before sharing the news we’ve all been waiting for.
Witherspoon confirmed in 2018 that a third Legally Blonde film was in the works. It was announced in 2020 that Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor would be penning the third film. Additionally, in case you couldn’t get enough of Elle Woods, a second spin-off series was announced to be in development via Deadline.
It appears that the Elle series is coming much sooner than the untitled second series and Legally Blonde 3. We’re not complaining, especially when there’s plenty of Elle Woods content on the way. Witherspoon’s production company, Hello Sunshine, is behind the series, with Insecure and Black Monday screenwriter Laura Kittrell.
And fans aren’t concerned either. In fact, they’re ecstatic over the news.
Lux Pascal, actress and sister to Pedro Pascal, used Elle’s own words, writing, “Warner…do you remember when we spent those 4 amazing hours in the hot tub after winter formal? This is so much better than that!” While American Samoa footballer Jaiyah Saelua, who’s portrayed in the Taika Waititi-directed Next Goal Wins, commented “OMG YAAAAY!!!” And Oscar-nominated filmmaker Ava DuVernay simply commented with four pink hearts.
Elle would definitely approve.
“I truly couldn’t be more excited about this series!” Witherspoon said in a statement. “Fans will get to know how Elle Woods navigated her world as a teenager with her distinct personality and ingenuity, in ways that only our beloved Elle could do. What could be better than that?! I’m extremely grateful to the incredible teams at Prime Video and Hello Sunshine – along with our amazing writer Laura Kittrell – for making this dream of mine come true. Legally Blonde is back!”
Elle premieres in 2025 on Prime Video.
