Florida Man Killed By Roommate For Alleged Sexual Advances

A Florida man was stabbed to death Monday because his roommate feared the man was making sexual advances toward him, say police.

The incident happened just 20 miles and a day apart from another anti-gay attack that is being investigated as a possible hate crime.

Leon Frazier was 60 years old and living in West Park with Johnny Edward Granger, 53.

“Granger admitted to stabbing Frazier three times outside their home in West Park the evening of April 9 because he felt the victim was making sexual advances towards him,” said Broward County Sheriff’s Office in a statement

Shortly after 9 pm, Frazier’s sister found him bleeding profusely from several stab wounds in the back. He was rushed to Memorial Regional Hospital, where he died.

Granger initially fled the scene, said police. Detectives tracked him down at a relative’s home on Tuesday. He exited, hands over his head, and confessed, according to authorities.

Police did not immediately respond to a request to comment on whether the murder was being investigated as a hate crime.

Granger is being charged with premeditated murder and is being held without bond. His past charges dating back to 2000 included domestic violence, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, burglary, resisting arrest and theft.

West Park borders Miami-Dade County where a gay couple and bystander were beaten during Miami Beach Pride just one day earlier in what authorities are investigating as a possible hate crime. Four men have been charged with that attack.

The city also sits in southeast Broward County, home to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School where one the worst mass shootings in the country’s history have thrust students into the battle over gun control.

Frazier’s death comes at time a when violence against LGBTQ people and people of color is at all-time reported high. The National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs (NCAVP), which tracks anti-LGBTQ hate violence recorded more homicides in 2017 than ever before.

NCAVP recorded 52 hate-related homicides against LGBTQ and HIV-impacted people last year, an appalling 86 percent rise over 2016. Nearly two-thirds of of the victims were people of color.
