A Pride park bench in a small UK town was set on fire in the middle of the night. As police investigate what they suspect to be a hate crime, a local queer organization has already raised more than double its fundraising goal to replace the bench.

North Herts Pride, a UK LGBTQ+ non-profit based in North Hertfordshire, announced on Tuesday that the rainbow bench they installed in Hitchin in 2023 was vandalized. Photos show nearly half of the bench had sustained fire damage, including a plaque on which the words “Love Conquers All” was still visible.

“We are devastated and deeply saddened to learn that the North Herts Pride bench on Windmill Hill was set on fire last night,” the group wrote on Facebook. “This bench was more than just a seat—it was a vibrant symbol of love, inclusivity, and unity. Painted in the colours of the Pride flag, it stood as a celebration of the LGBTQ+ community in our area, a reminder that everyone belongs and has a right to feel safe, seen, and valued.
“Acts like this are not just vandalism—they are attacks on visibility, acceptance, and progress. It is heartbreaking that someone chose to destroy something that brought hope and representation to so many.”
North Herts Pride organized a crowdfunding campaign through JustGiving to replace the bench. Within just a few days, the group has surpassed its initial fundraising target of £650 by more than double, raising over £1,600 (at the time of writing).
North Herts Police have launched an investigation into the arson, requesting any witnesses to come forward. “We are continuing to establish the full circumstances of this incident and are appealing for any information,” PC Lewis Thomson, the North Herts Hate Crime Officer said. “We are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area during the times to find out whether anybody saw anything suspicious.
“We know that this crime may have affected members of the LGBTQ+ community and I want to assure people that a full and thorough investigation will take place.”
PC Thompson directed those with information to contact him at [email protected] or to use the reference number 41/35012/25 when calling the non-emergency number 101.
