Donald Trump attempted to capitalize yesterday on right-wing outrage over a comment made by President Joe Biden.

Trump, wearing an orange, hi-viz vest, rode a garbage truck during an appearance in Wisconsin. He wore the same vest at a rally in the state.

“How do you like my garbage truck? This truck is in honor of Kamala and Joe Biden,” he told reporters.

The garbage truck stunt came in reaction to a video call Biden made as part of the Harris campaign on Tuesday. Biden criticized the Puerto Rico comments by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe at Trump’s Madison Square Garden Rally on Sunday.

Biden said — as transcribed by the White House — “And just the other day, a speaker at his rally called Puerto Rico a ‘floating island of garbage.’ Well, let me tell you something. I don’t — I — I don’t know the Puerto Rican that — that I know — or a Puerto Rico, where I’m from, in my home state of Delaware, they’re good, decent, honorable people,” Biden said.

“The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporter’s — his — his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American. It’s totally contrary to everything we’ve done, everything we’ve been.”

Inflatable doll

Controversy has raged over whether Biden meant Trump “supporters” or “supporter’s” (i.e. Hinchcliffe). MAGA have pounced on the comment as Biden calling anyone voting for Trump “garbage”, despite Biden clarifying what he meant in a separate tweet.

Unsurprisingly, Donald Trump, known for his heavy use of bronzer and makeup, wearing a bright orange vest, made for a meme-worthy visual. One photo in particular has grabbed attention. Trump is caught with his mouth open. Many people thought he resembled a blow-up doll.

Others saw Oompa-Loompa comparisons.

And here are a few more reactions.

Donald Trump nearly falling over as he attempted to get into the truck also prompted plenty of comment.

Although Joe Biden has denied suggestions he was calling all Trump supporters “garbage”, and Kamala Harris distancing herself from the remark, expect Republicans to continue to try and use “garbage” in the final days of the campaign. This is despite Trump himself calling his opponents “sick people” and “scum”. He has also called the US the “garbage can” of the world due to immigration in recent years.
