JD Vance’s hypocrisy laid bare with one tweet

Donald Trump’s Vice Presidential pick, JD Vance, faced backlash yesterday over one of his tweets. Vance blasted Joe Biden for a comment the President made on a video call during a Harris campaign speech last night.

Against a backdrop of the White House, Kamala Harris delivered her rallying speech at the Ellipse in Washington, D.C. It’s the site where Donald Trump infamously gave a speech on January 6, 2020, before rioters stormed the capitol.

Political observers feel Harris presented a suitably presidential image to viewers, highlighting what she wants to deliver and reminding people of the chaos of the Trump years.

Biden’s video call

Biden appeared via video link. In what some are calling the evening’s only fumble, Biden spoke out against Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally on Sunday.

“And just the other day, a speaker at his rally called Puerto Rico a ‘floating island of garbage.’ Well, let me tell you something. I don’t — I — I don’t know the Puerto Rican that — that I know — or a Puerto Rico, where I’m from, in my home state of Delaware, they’re good, decent, honorable people,” Biden said according to a transcript from the White House.

“The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporter’s — his — his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American. It’s totally contrary to everything we’ve done, everything we’ve been.”

Republicans have seized upon the comment. They say Biden was calling Trump “supporters” garbage (yes, grammar nerds – this is where the use of an apostrophe in “supporter’s” is very relevant)

Vance took to X to voice his disgust.

“This is disgusting. Kamala Harris and her boss Joe Biden are attacking half of the country. There’s no excuse for this. I hope Americans reject it.”

“We have to stop getting so offended”

One of the problems with this is that on Monday Vance appeared at a campaign event and dismissed the furor over the Puerto Rico “joke” told by so-called comic Tony Hinchcliffe at Trump’s rally. Vance said, “I have heard about the joke… Maybe it’s a stupid, racist joke… Maybe it is not. But we have to stop getting so offended at every little thing … I’m so over it.”

And yet, one day later, here’s Vance getting offended. Many were quick to point out the hypocrisy.

Biden himself took to X to clarify what he meant by his comment.

“Earlier today I referred to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico spewed by Trump’s supporter at his Madison Square Garden rally as garbage—which is the only word I can think of to describe it. His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable. That’s all I meant to say. The comments at that rally don’t reflect who we are as a nation.”
