Queer psychologist and therapist Mary Trump was among those to offer a take on Donald Trump’s re-election today.
Mary, a long-time outspoken critic of her uncle, reacted to the news of his re-election with two short sentences on X.
“I am so deeply sorry. I thought better of us,” she said.

Just after 5.30am ET, the Associated Press called Wisconsin for Donald Trump, pushing him over the 270 electoral votes needed to claim victory. He’d already won other battleground states, including Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Georgia.
Trump’s re-election has left many in the LGBTQ+ community stunned. At 78, he becomes the oldest person ever elected President of the United States. He’s also the first candidate in over 100 years to be re-elected President after previously leaving office.
Republicans have also flipped the Senate.
In a victory speech to supporters at the Palm Beach County Convention Center, Trump said America had delivered him a “powerful mandate” to pursue his agenda. His running mate, JD Vance, called Trump’s victory, “the greatest political comeback in American history.”
At the time of writing, Kamala Harris has yet to have made a statement.
Mary Trump has consistently criticized her uncle’s suitability for high office. Only yesterday, in her “The Good In Us” newsletter, she wrote: “There are many reasons this country needs to turn the page on Donald and those who support him, but near the top of the list has to be the extreme national security threat he represents.”
2020 prediction
After Donald Trump’s defeat in 2020, Mary thought it unlikely he would run again this year.
“In four years, he will be the same age Joe Biden is now,” she told CNN. “However, Donald is a very unhealthy person. He has a terrible diet, he doesn’t exercise, he has psychological disorders that continue to go untreated, so I don’t even imagine that he’ll even be able to run in four years.
“I know he’s said that he would and that’s weird because that’s conceding the loss now, but I think that was floated initially as a way to appease him and his ego, but he will never put himself in a position where he can lose like this again.”
Many people online expressed empathy for Mary Trump’s tweet and wished her well.
Mary, thank you for all that you did. Please make sure that you are protecting yourself.

Apparently my parents teaching me to be a decent and good person was bad advice. Should have been a criminal con artist then ran for president.

So counter intuitive. He was so bizarre in recent weeks I thought he was trying to lose. It is like “The Producers”, where they tried to make a flop and it was a hit.

You did your duty… screaming off the rooftop. I appreciate you! I echo your disappointment… I thought we were all better.
