A Representative-Elect in the Texas House has filed legislation that would ban pharmacies from selling adult toys.
Hillary Hickland won her election in the state’s 55th District in November and will officially take office next month. She’s decided a priority for her and her constituents is to stop the likes of Walmart and CVS from selling sex toys.
Hickland believes “obscene devices” should only be sold in “sexually oriented businesses.”
“Our family-oriented retailers should reflect the values of the communities they serve,” Hickland said in a press release. ”Parents do not consent to their children being exposed to obscene devices while shopping for toothpaste. House Bill 1549 provides common-sense protections for families by ensuring parents can shop with their children without encountering sexually explicit items that compromise their innocence.”

Should the legislation pass in the Republican-controlled House, businesses may face a fine of $5,000 if they breach it.
I couldn’t have said it better. Thank you @Bentley4Texas. I will always fight to protect our children. #HHfor55 https://t.co/nnIWoRGSaJ

Christian mom activist
Although new to the Texas House, Hickland has a background as a Christian mom who has campaigned against LGBTQ+ books in school libraries. She removed three of her own children from public schools in recent years.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott endorsed Hickland in her campaign for a House seat. He did so after the incumbent GOP. Rep. Hugh Shine voted against one of Abbott’s priority legislative measures. This was the adoption of a state-wide school voucher system that basically allows parents to use public dollars for private school tuition, often at religious schools. Hickland backed the school voucher system (which failed during the last legislative session) and beat Shine in the Republican Primary.
Donald Trump and Ted Cruz also endorsed Hickland.
Hickland is not the only GOP figure to express upset over sex toys in pharmacies. In December 2022, US Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) raged about Target and CVS selling adult devices.

“By the way, you can pick up a butt plug or a dildo at Target and CVS nowadays. I don’t even know how we got here. …This is the state that we’re living in right now.” pic.twitter.com/99ftnsEyA5
