A trio of self-described “bearded, burly” transgender men recently caused a stir at a Kansas water park by simply following state law. The group, wearing matching “Compliance Crew” shirts, used the women’s restroom and changing area because the state requires individuals to use facilities matching the sex listed on their birth certificates, as Daniel Villarreal reported for LGBTQ Nation. The incident resulted in a manager rushing children out of the area and police questioning the men about their bodies to avoid arrest.
The activists are intentionally adhering to S.B. 244, a law passed by the Kansas legislature over a gubernatorial veto. The legislation invalidates updated gender markers on state IDs and penalizes local governments that fail to enforce its bathroom restrictions. By entering women’s spaces as legally required, the transmasculine protestors aim to highlight what they describe as the absurdity and public safety risks of segregating facilities based on sex assigned at birth.
Organizers of the compliance campaign noted that while transfeminine individuals often face the brunt of legislative scrutiny, transmasculine people can use their relative visibility to visually demonstrate the flaws in these policies. The group has visited several public facilities across the state, sparking conversations about how the enforcement of such laws forces individuals to choose between their personal safety and legal compliance.
