Another day, another gender reveal party causing panic on the TL. This couple’s festivities went from fun to fiery in a matter of seconds. Now, the internet is weighing in.

A TikTok video from a gender reveal party is circulating the internet for all the wrong reasons. A couple stands on either side of rocket ship-shaped cake, complete with a sparkle. But what they do next reiterates how out of hand these parties have gotten.

Both parents hold mini fire extinguishers with dyed chemicals inside. The dad uses his extinguisher, spraying out pink contents. But things go horribly awry when the cake begins to lean and catches on fire from the highly flammable dye.

Yikes. Party attendees, including the videographer, scatter in panic as the place is set ablaze. Gender reveal faux pas continue make the internet ponder the necessity of them.

For starters, gender reveal parties are actually sex reveal parties, since the child will ultimately let everyone know what their gender is. Secondly, the trend is now responsible for terrifying explosions, forest fires, and pilot deaths. Not to mention, the originator of the gender reveal party trend even regrets creating it.

In 2008, blogger Jenna Karvunidis developed the idea as she was “just looking for a way to up the ante and get everyone excited and involved.” Ultimately, she used the party to celebrate being able to tell their child’s sex, after enduring a series of painful miscarriages. Karvundis initially felt responsible for the trend getting out of hand, but has since realized that the parties would’ve happened without her influence.

Now, Karvunidis is the proud parent of three children, and she’s not concerned with policing their gender.

“You don’t want what’s between your legs to guide your path in life,” Karvunidis stated in an article for the Guardian. “I want my kids to grow up in a world where gender doesn’t matter.”
