The rise of MAGA has taught us anything, it’s that inside of every seemingly decent person, there could be a grifter lurking, ready to spring out at any moment. And if it’s taught the grifters anything, it’s how to extend their 15 minutes of fame into an entire self-sustaining content platform.

Just consider the case of the October 7th detransitioner, who we talked about a few weeks ago. An individual who goes by Maia Poet on X has just revealed the latest twist in her entirely predictable saga: she’s MAGA now.

She’s also calling for fellow late converts to the church of MAGA to share how they “[woke] up from woke.”
This might not feel too surprising—we’ve seen last-minute MAGA converts on our timelines for a while now, and they’re nothing new. But the thread reveals a troublesome trend whose implications feel scary as hell during this election season.
In one comment, a user known simply as “Marglinalized Bigot” (off to a great start) wrote:
“2020 I was a Bernie supporter. Biden stole the primary from him. I hated that child sniffer. Then I see everyone praising Biden after he won. Even CRYING! I lost my sh*t. It felt like upside down world. I unplugged and after awhile I saw the truth about Trump. I’m voting maga!”
To which Maia responded, “I was a Bernie supporter too!”
I think we’ve all known for awhile that there were people like this out there—folks who started out campaigning hard for Bernie Sanders, and by some strange alchemy ended up becoming MAGA-heads. But how does this actually happen? What do Sanders and Trump even have in common? They’re about as diametrically opposed as you can get.
But apparently the Bernie to Trump pipeline is all too real, and we’re seeing evidence of it firsthand on X.
Whether this particular detransitioner is going full MAGA as part of the grift (likely) or simply having a moment, we don’t know. What we do know is that it’s a horrible look for October 2024 and we’re all embarrassed for her.
