The Euphoria Finale Was A Hot Mess — Here’s Why

What a wild ride. Euphoria’s second season has been all anyone could talk about for the past eight weeks. Now, after last night’s episode, “All My Life, My Heart Has Yearned For A Thing I Cannot Name,” the season has come to a close. And in true Euphoria fashion, the finale was a chaotic disaster.

It kicked off where we left off, with Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) storming the stage at Lexi’s play. I can’t say I’m surprised — Cassie has been a damn mess for all 8 episodes.

But Lexi (Maude Apatow) has been messy too! Her play included graphic details from her classmates’ lives, including scenes she wasn’t even present for. Was Lexi even at the carnival in Season 1?

Cassie was quickly chased offstage by Maddy (Alexa Demie), who FINALLY got a little bit of revenge for everything that’s happened to her this season. Watching her slam Cassie into that brick wall was … *chef’s kiss.*

Then there’s the whole situation with Fez, Faye and Ashtray. Thank goodness Faye (Chloe Cherry) finally took some action against her dickwad boyfriend, warning Fez (Angus Cloud) to stay silent and trying to frame Laurie for Mouse’s murder.

But it was in vain, unfortunately, because Ashtray (Javon “Wanna” Walton) can’t seem to stop murdering people. Look, I get where he was coming from killing Faye’s boyfriend — he didn’t know that they were being tapped — but why did he hunker down in that bathtub with all the firearms?? WHY’D HE GET HIMSELF KILLED???

And of course, it’s not the episode’s biggest tragedy, but Fez never made it to Lexi’s play. I’m still rooting for Fexi, but it might be hard considering Fez is no doubt gonna face some repercussions from this finale.

The real reason this episode felt like a mess is the misallocation of time. There were a million loose ends that didn’t get tied up — but sure, let’s devote a solid five minutes to Elliott (Dominic Fike) singing Rue (Zendaya) a little song. I get it, it’s Dominic Fike! He has a great voice! But don’t we have a plot to get to?

Meanwhile, lots of the season’s plot lines seemed to vanish into thin air. What happened to Rue’s failed deal with Laurie? And that $10,000 suitcase of drugs she lost?

These problems have plagued Euphoria all season, but they felt extra egregious in this episode knowing how long we’ll have to wait for Season 3. Given Zendaya’s busy filming schedule for other projects, we might not see more Euphoria until the end of 2023 or even later.

For all the show’s faults, I will miss commiserating about it with the entire Internet every Sunday night. Goodbye, Euphoria Day. You served us well.
