Demi Lovato is Officially One of Us

Just when you thought you couldn’t love the multi-talented beam of queer light that is singer, actor, and activist Demi Lovato, they come out as nonbinary.

That’s right: this morning, the “Dancing With the Devil/The Art of Starting Over” singer came out as nonbinary.

“This has come after a lot of healing & self-reflective work,” Lovato added. “I’m still learning & coming into myself, & I don’t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson. Sharing this with you now opens another level of vulnerability for me.” If there’s anyone who knows how to be vulnerable, it’s Demi Lovato, an artist who paved the way for a new, open conversation around addiction and eating disorders in Hollywood. They’ve been honest about their struggle with addiction for years, and their two most recent albums, 2017’s “Tell Me You Love Me” and 2021’s “Dancing With the Devil/The Art of Starting Over” have dealt openly with Lovato’s breakups, low moments, and struggles with self-love. As Lovato continues to come into their own, their candidness around the hard subjects that no one seems to want to talk about has gained them loyal fans in the queer community–especially after the singer came out as queer last year. Their new album goes into detail about their queerness, in fact. The standout hit “The Kind of Lover I Am” goes: “Doesn’t matter you’re a woman or man/ That’s the kind of lover I am” Before launching into a spoken segment where Demi themselves explains, “if somebody comes along, and they just look at me the right way and tells the right joke, I don’t care if you’ve got a dick, I don’t care if you’ve got a WAP, I just want to love.”

Only

Yesterday, Lovato took the opportunity to reach out to fans to spread awareness about eating disorders, which are among the deadliest mental illnesses, affecting 9% of the American population as a whole.

And just when you thought it wasn’t possible for Lovato to advocate any harder for a better world, they dropped the casual coming out this morning, along with a fresh new haircut.

It’s giving us VERY queer, deep nonbinary feelings. And we’re not the only ones. User @JenStJude on Twitter had some very positive words for the moment:

And some positive GIF reactions:

While user @offbeatkiki reminded us that nonbinary doesn’t look any one way–that’s the beauty of it, babe!

And user @Lovatosgloss sent a very sweet nonbinary valentine to welcome Demi into the community:

While TikToker @h.lxy could not contain their excitement.
